In mid-December, American Airlines announced it will begin daily nonstop service between Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Madrid, Spain, starting May 1, 2009. American will fly the route with its 225-seat Boeing 767-300 aircraft in two-class configuration.
American announced the route with the expectation that its joint business agreement and antitrust immunity application with British Airways and Iberia will be approved, and believes DFW-Madrid will be the first of many opportunities for American to enhance and expand connections between the United States and Europe.
Antitrust immunity will allow the participating airlines to work together on international routes by coordinating their service, schedules, connections and fares to deliver more convenient and improved travel options for customers. This would mean enhanced and improved service on oneworld’s network of 8,951 daily departures to 663 destinations in 134 countries.
Once approved, the door will open even wider for more opportunities to enhance and expand connections across the Atlantic… allowing American’s customers to benefit from greater choice and greater access to the world… and providing greater benefits to the Dallas/Fort Worth community and North Texas.
The inaugural departure, Flight 36, will depart DFW at 5:35 p.m., Friday, May 1, and arrive in Madrid at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 2 – a flight lasting approximately 9 hours, 25 minutes. The first departure from Spain, Flight 37, will depart Madrid at 1:10 p.m., Saturday, May 2, and arrive at DFW at 4:45 p.m. the same day – a flight lasting approximately 10 hours, 35 minutes.
